Ever sit down in your stylist’s chair for a service and get something that is completely different from what you had in mind? Sometimes it’s like sitting down with someone who speaks a whole other language. In many ways “hair talk” is a whole different language. So here’s a quick guide to understanding the terms and getting the look you’re pining for.
Hair cutting:
Layers
Layering often refers to cutting the hair at different lengths all over. This technique is used to create movement, texture and remove weight from the hair. Layer length can be altered depending on the desired look.
Angles
Angles are a reference to angling the hair around the face, as in an angled bob. Angled bobs can also be called an A-line bob or graduated bob, think Posh Spice or Rhianna. Angling around the face generally describes soft layering, short to long, following the face shape.
Fringe
Fringe is a more current word used instead of using “bangs.” Blunt or side sweeping are common looks for fringe.
Razoring
Razoring is a term used for the type of equipment implemented in your haircut. The razor is a tool that is usually a blade with a handle covered by a guard. This tool creates a soft edge to the hair and creates an overall shattered appearance to the look.
Point Cutting and Dry Cutting
Point cutting can be done wet or dry and is another way to create softness to the overall look of the cut. Dry cutting is used mostly to polish off a cut and create a clean blended look.
Hair Colour:
Semi or Demi Colour
These terms are used to describe the type of product used to colour the hair and generally speak to the length of time the colour will last. These services can last from 8 shampoos to 4 weeks, and are more gentle on the hair. This service is a great option for those who want a gentle gray blending.
Weave:
Weaving the hair is when sections of the hair are put into foils and colored or lightened separately. Depending on the look you are trying to achieve, weaves can be all throughout the hair or as an accent of color around the face.
Colour Blocking
Colour blocking is when a specific area of the hair is colored a different tone than the all over look. They are generally done in panels and give a bold effect.
Baliage or Hand Painting
This effect is done by picking up sections of the hair and painting colour or lightener in specific places to accent a cut.
Now that you’re up to speed with “hair speak,” your next visit to any of the Charles Penzone Family of Salons should result in a perfect consultation and a look that’s just right for you. Don’t forget, a picture speaks a thousand words. Don’t be afraid to bring a picture of your favorite celeb to help spark the conversation.
